Aphrodite High

Chapter 5- It’s Been A While, Hasn’t It?

~Clary~

I couldn’t believe how much time has past being here at the school. 3 months have gone by and I still didn’t know what my abilities really were. I seemed to be decent at healing with different plant materials and something akin to potions, but as far as pure ability is concerned, I felt like a dud. The boys were all supporting me the best they could, even Blake. He had taken to sneaking into my room at night and sleeping at the foot of my bed in cat form a lot. I didn’t mind, even though Lance and Dai weren’t very happy about it. Dai liked to play games with me and Lance enjoys chatting about his reading classes and having intense philosophical conversations with me. Everyone had kind of settled into their place in the house. The only time I ever worried about my safety was when I had sliced my fingers while slicing potatoes on the kitchen mandolin. Lance was there and both Dai and Blake had to hold him back while I ran out of the apartment to get to the infirmary as quickly as possible. He had felt really bad about it, but nobody got hurt so it turned out alright. But there was still something missing in my life.

I missed Angel terribly.

We had only talked once last week, and Even the guys started noticing how depressed I was getting at times. I’m sure Angel was really busy, his uncle got kicked by one of the cows and had broken his leg a couple months ago, so Angel picked up the slack around the family farm. I really admired his perseverance and dedication to his family. I wished he could come visit soon though. I really wanted to show him around and spend some quality time with him. There was a knock at my door frame and I glanced up. “Wanna go for a walk Clary?” Dai grinned.

“Sure.” I smiled back. Today was his long day for classes and I’m sure he was feeling cooped up. Closing my medicinal herbs textbook, I slipped my shoes on and grabbed my keys. “Where are we going?” I asked.

“Well, I don’t know. I just want to walk around with you.” He said.

“Oh…” I was a bit stunned by his answer, he usually wanted to go to the park or to the track. We left the house and headed toward the heart of campus.

“Have you been feeling alright?” He asked.

“Yeah, I made a salve perfect for burns earlier today.” I said. He smiled.

“That’s good, but that’s not what I meant. You’ve been extra quiet lately, and have been daydreaming a lot.” He said.

“What do you mean daydreaming?” I asked.

“I don’t know, you just get this cute look on your face and stare off into nothing. Unless you’re developing the powers of a medium and can see things that I can’t, I would say that’s daydreaming.” He chuckled. I felt my face warm slightly. I don’t think I would ever get used to Dai’s casual straightforwardness.

“It’s just been a crazy few months. I’m still stressing about the whole ability issue still. I’m worried I’ll get kicked out if I don’t start making progress soon.” I explained. I didn’t want to say anything about Angel. Whenever I brought him up, the boys just didn’t understand how much he meant to me. But they were nice about it, it was just, awkward I guess.

“The headmistress said you’ll figure it all out when the time is right. We all believe in you. It’ll be alright.” Dai said confidently. It moved me that he invited me out because he was worried about me.

“Yeah, but still, it would be nice if my oh so special abilities would reveal themselves to me sooner rather than later.” I chuckled.

“That’s better Clary.” Dai walked backwards in front of me. “You’re face lights up when you smile.”

“Oh stop teasing Dai!” I laughed more. Dai took my hand in his and shook his head.

“Nope, not if it means you have fun.” He said,

“C-Clary?” I heard a voice from my right and both Dai and I glanced over at the source. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“Angel? No way, Angel?! Is that really you?!” I ran straight to him. He was holding a duffle bag and dropped it in order to catch me as I collided into him. “Angel! What are you…How, why, I…”

“Can’t even talk straight anymore I see.” He laughed and hugged me. He had gotten so muscular, and a bit taller too. I looked up and gasped.

“No braces?! When did my best friend grow up?!” I grinned.

“So, this is the infamous Angel is it?” Dai spoke up from behind me.

“It is, pleased to meet you. Are you one of the guys who lives with Clary?” Angel asked.

“I am, name’s Dai.” He said.

“Well, then thank you.” Angel said. Dai’s face went blank with confusion.

“For what?” He asked.

“For making sure Clary is safe and not alone.” Angel said. Dai blinked but then puffed out his chest proudly.

“Of course! Clary can always rely on me!” He said, which made me chuckle.

“Angel, are you here for a visit? Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

“Well, funny thing, I got a letter in the mail see, and it was worded so strangely. I guess this is kind of meant for you too. Plus, I wanted to surprise you.” He pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and unfolded it.

“Is this an acceptance letter?!” I started reading. “…You’ll find what you’re looking for here, find her and the spare room is yours.” I looked at him confused.

“It came with this.” He held out a key. “I just spoke with the weird old lady that runs this place. She didn’t say much else.” I pulled my key to the apartment out and Dai spoke first.

“That’s a key to our apartment. Angel is going to be the last roommate?” He asked. I grinned from ear to ear.

“Yes! Yes that has to be it yes!” I suddenly looked up at Angel and my smile fell.

“What is it?” He asked.

“What are you? What’s your power?” I asked. He gave me a blank look.

“Uh, my what?” He asked.

“Maybe he’s like you Clary. He has to figure it out for himself. He’s no pixie that’s for sure, or Vampire, or fire wielder, or Neko, or-”

“Yes Dai, I think that’s true. Angel, this is a school for the supernatural and extraordinary.”
