Chapter 44
✾Zak✾
“Where did she go?” I muttered to myself looking around the busy hall.
“Excuse me,” I hear someone say but I don’t know who they’re talking to so I start to move from my spot to only have my wrist grabbed. I turn to see who grabbed my arm. For a moment, my eyes widened and my heart pounded in fear.
It’s one of my old classmates. He was on the swim team with me, “C-can I help you?” I asked him.
“Zak, Zachary Marquardt,” He said. I looked at him and blinked a few times, I don’t know what to say, what do I do? After a minute of not replying to him he sighed and let go of my wrist, “I’m sorry, you look a lot like someone I knew back in high school. He was one of my role models.”
“I mean, m-my name is Zak, b-but I just moved her recently s-so I don’t know who you’re talking about,” I lied to him.
He smiled softly at me and put a hand on my head, “Down to the freckles you look like someone that I really looked up to back when I was in high school,” His hand slid off my head, “I’m sorry if I frightened you.”
“Maybe you can help me,” I said stopping him from leaving, “I lost track of my friend. She’s this tall, very pretty, black hair that’s been curled and she has emerald-green eyes.
“Oh, yeah, I think I saw a girl around your age go out the front door of the building,” He answered, “Don’t blame her, it is getting a bit warm in here.”
“Thank you so much,” I wave and make my way through the crowd.
I found her outside and that asshole was out there. I got him to go away and Vera and I danced around for a little bit before Mrs. Smirnov came and got us. We got into the car and I feel my body relax. I feel exhausted.
“That was exciting, did you kids have fun?” Mrs. Smirnov asked turning around to look at us.
“It wasn’t bad,” I answered with a smile. It was a bit hard with such a large crowd, though.”
“I can see how that can make you not feel all that well. But you both did very well,” Mr. Smirnov commented.
“You seem to really hit it off tonight,” I mentioned to Vera’s father.
“Dad’s always been a social butterfly,” Vera giggled and I smiled back at her.
“I am not, it’s just easy for me to get a conversation going with people is all,” Vera’s father protested.
Vera’s mom laughed, “Darling, that’s practically the definition of a social butterfly. I’m just glad you were able to have some fun tonight.”
Vera’s parents talked more so to each other than Vera and me on the way back home from the fairgrounds.
“You look tired,” Vera commented and I looked over at her from looking out the window.
“A little bit. But I’m fine,” I smiled at her, “You doing alright?”
“Mhm,” She nods with a small smile.
We pull into the drive way and get out of the car, “It’s good to be home,” I sighed stretching as I walk around the car and get the door for Vera.
“Why thank you, good sir,” She smiled up at me and hooked her arm around mine.
“Your welcome,” I said smiling back, we walked into the house and I took off my shoes at the door and stood there for Vera to use me as a brace to be able to get her shoes off.
“I’m going to go wash my make up and take a shower,” She said and made her way up the stairs.
“Okay honey,” Mrs. Smirnov smiled sweetly.
“You look beat Zak,” Mr. Smirnov commented.
“I’m just a little tired is all. I’m going to get out of this and brush the gel out of my hair,” I told him and wandered upstairs myself.
“How did it go?” Anthony asked after I shut my door.
“Saw one of our old classmates. I can’t remember his name, but I know he was on the swim team with me,” I answered taking off the jacket and then working on the button shirt.
“Did he say something to you?”
“He did, but I panicked and didn’t say anything to him. I think he just figured I looked like the person he just to know. I don’t know what to do when it’s someone from the past,” I sighed switching into a tank top then taking off the slacks and getting into some shorts.
“I wouldn’t know what to do either. Just try to relax, though you look like you need it,” He said as I took off my glasses and grabbed my comb to work on getting the gel out of my hair.
“How was your time, while we were gone?” I asked him.
“It was fine. Not much has changed in the house. Except the modern technology and the new furniture. It feels like the house for the face lift it needed,” He answered.
“It did,” I agreed working on my hair, “I’m happy they moved in.”
“Same,” I can hear the smile in his voice.
Finally, I get the gel mostly out of my hair, I set down the comb with a sigh of relief, “I’m going to go down stairs,” I told him.
“Alright, I’ll wonder down too. I’ll just stay hidden,” Tony said and disappeared from sight.
I left my room and started down the hall. The shower was running so I assume Vera’s taking a shower. When I get down stairs I was right, she wasn’t down there. Only Mr. Smirnov was down stairs he was in his flannel pajama pants and a white t-shirt.
“Mrs. Smirnov in the other shower?” I asked.
“She’s waiting for Vera to be done to hop in the shower, but it does take some time to get that make up off,” He said as I sat down, “Can you hand me my paper?” I got back up and grabbed the newspaper for him and then handed it to him before sitting back down. I relaxed into the chair and I closed my eyes to relax and ended up dozing off.
