Sometimes life throws hard times at us. At those times, we must never forget who we are and what we strive for. Never forget your dreams.

Midnight Blade [continuation]

The next day, Mr. Kane introduced me to the promised traveling mercenary. We were standing outside of the office in the afternoon sunlight. Hayden was standing by my side again. The mercenary was a tall, notably thin man with muscular arms. He had calm, analytical eyes the color of jade which glowed in a mysterious way. His curly, indigo colored hair fell down to his chin. The clothes he wore mainly consisted of dark colors which complimented on his hair; a cape that only draped over one shoulder, a a weird jacket that split at the end, a simple cotton turtle-neck, pants, and laced-up army boots. The side of his arm that didn't have the cape was covered with one sleeve of his shirt. A long sword at his belt could be seen on one side, while on his back there was a strange-looking device that resembled a large boomerang with a sail.

I felt an odd sense of danger around him... It felt dangerous, but it also seemed that he was very protective and compassionate. It seemed I could trust him. "This is Ryuu Takashi. He'll be leading you out of harms way and to the Midnight Blade's sanctuary." Mr. Kane explained. Hayden and I both expectantly looked up at him. He gracefully bowed and stood up straight again, and we did too. I hoped he isn't mute, otherwise this journey will be harder than I thought.

"How old is he?" I asked bluntly. When you want to know something, I've learned to just ask it. Mr. Kane's face suddenly showed shock, as if he were afraid to insult Takashi-kun. But, Takashi-kun nodded gently, and said, "I'm... in my mid-thirties." I stared on at him. Hayden gave a sigh of relief for some reason.

"Well, anyways, do you have all of the supplies you will need?" Emil asked me. "Um, yeah Dad. I think... we're ready." I told him. He nodded. "Very well, then." He said. "Are they leaving now?" Shana asked Mr. Kane. "I'm afraid. They're good kids, so I believe we do not have to worry too much." He said confidently. Wow, if only he knew. Joking... I watched Hayden's parents walk over to him and each gave him a big warm hug. "Just... don't do anything I wouldn't do, son." His father told him. "Same as I. Please, make everyone here proud of you." His mother told him. He nodded. I smiled. He would, I knew it.

My parents also gave me a big hug, and told me to make them proud, too. My father also told me to remember what he had told me the day before, about time. "Don't worry, I won't forget." I said as a stubborn tear fell down my cheek. "Mom, I love you." I said, hugging her, "Thank you for everything." She laughed. "No, honey, thank you." She said.

After our goodbyes, we left our hometown in search of something we didn't have a clue about how powerful or dangerous it was, along with a man who we barely knew anything about. Little did I know that danger was in fact lurking around every nook and cranny, and it was as if possibly the whole world was out to get me and my impossible powers.

Midnight Blade

I looked out onto the great green field. The wind was gently blowing the thin blades of grass towards the west. It was summer, and it was hot without that gentle breeze... I sighed. I thought about what I had discovered not but two weeks ago...A power I had never realized before. It happened at night, and I thought it was a dream at first, but it was real. I think I had somehow opened a new dimension in my world, Indarius.

I was relaxed, until I heard a familiar voice call my name. "Kara!" I looked to where the voice was coming from. It was Hayden Carter, a good friend of mine, in fact, my best friend. He has this wild blond hair, bright blue eyes, fair skin, and was tall and lean as well as muscular. Yeah, he was strong and skilled too.

But that's not why he's my best friend; we've known each other since we were three because of our parents. Both of our parents work for the Great Province, our city's government. So we were basically slapped together in the middle of their lives between politics and no secrets were safe, so we became good friends and trusted each other.

"What is it, Hayden?" I asked. "C'mon, there's this big argument going on back at the office! I think it's about you, too!" He said excitedly. He grabbed my hand and led me to the office in town. The streets were busy with steam engine vehicles and people walking the markets along the sidewalks. The buildings were mostly made of brick, and were so close together they couldn't have yards. The place I lived in was called the Province of Indyrea. Strange, I know, but it's how the governments organized it. It works, so I don't complain.

Anyway, we finally made it to the office without getting ran over by cars or people. When we opened the door, we were greeted by many pairs of eyes looking at us rather annoyed-like. Me, being as shy as I am, started to blush and hid behind Hayden. He quietly looked down at me. "Kara, honey, what are you two doing here?" My mom, Shana, asked while standing up. Her beautiful red hair fell onto her narrow shoulders, and her glowing crystal-like eyes calmly examined me. I was wearing a simple violet dress with my usual black jacket and orange handbag hanging off my shoulder and resting on my hip. I gulped.

"Kara, we were just talking about you." My father, Emil, asked. He had light, brilliant black hair that stopped at his shoulders. His clothes mostly consisted of black, too. "Talking about what, exactly?" Hayden asked. One of the other men at the table, the mayor Travis Kane, slowly stood up. He was old, in his 60s, at least. His hair was getting gray and white, and his skin was dark against his light-colored suit. "It's the governments... they're weakening." He said softly. "What does that have to do with me?" I asked politely, but scared at the same time. I don't think I wanted to know.

"You-you know what you are, don't you?" He supposed. I raised an eyebrow. "I don't know what I am, but I know who I am, and what I can do." I told him. Mr. Kane raised both of his eyebrows at me this time. "What you can do... is a link to a very powerful man's desire. Do you wish to know this?" He said. I thought about it. I am not sure what he meant, but it sounded interesting to me at the time. So I said yes. "Prince Aries, is his name. He is on a conquest, and his goal is to take over the world and shatter it into ruin, just to rebuild his own." Mr. Kane explained.

I blinked. "But what does-" "You, Miss Kara, have a power that he is after. You can easily enter other dimensions by will; time travel, if you will. You can travel through the other worlds without causing a disturbance within the balance." He told me quickly. "So, I've told you. Now you must do something for me. The only way to defeat Prince Aries, is to find the sacred sword..." He added. I heard Hayden gasp behind me. "You don't mean... the Midnight Blade?!" He asked. Mr. Kane nodded. My eyes grew wide. No way... the sword that is in all of the legends! The only sword that was able to be held by mortals and still be strong enough to repel an even powerful god! The Midnight Blade...

"What say you? Are you ready to save the world of Indarius?" He inquired. I looked at my parents, who stared on helplessly. I then glanced at Hayden, who was speechless. "I... But, what if I'm not strong enough to wield the sword? Why can't Hayden do it? He's a lot tougher than I am. So why do I..." I said, trailing off, "Wait! Do I have to go alone?" My parents gasped and looked at Mr. Kane in concern. "No, of course not. I have a traveling mercenary who is willing to go with you on your journey to find the Midnight Blade. His name is Ryuu, a skilled swordsman himself. He will also teach you how to properly use a sword. As for you, Hayden..." He said, looking at Hayden, "Your parents are obliged to allow you to go with her, help protect her. She is our only true hope against the forces of Prince Aries." Hayden nodded and said, "Yes sir!"

And from that moment on, I will never forget the last thing my father told me. "I love you, Kara. Be careful and be strong. Time goes by faster than you think, and you can't predict it, nor control it. Remember this, okay?" "Yes, father." After that I hugged my mom, who whispered an "I love you too" in my ear. With that last minute, everything in my once-ordinary life was changed forever.
