Tales of Okuri Tale 3 of 7 Eliminating the Competition

Standing in the shadows, Inuko heard Daichi’s approach, and was able to dodge the swing of his nagamaki. A weapon with a simple wooden hilt as long as its blade, it was as long as he was tall. She pulled out her own nodachi to counter attack, but he just knocked it out of her hands, forcing her to the ground. “Never thought I’d end up killing my own sister like this.” He muttered. He raised his weapon to strike.

Unexpectantly, a dark shape leapt down from the high rooftop and Inuko recognized the distinctive red marks on his face. She began to quietly laugh, and this first confused Daichi. After a few moments, he was enraged and demanded to know what she thought was so funny. “You forgot about somebody. And I think he’s going to kill you.” She giggled.

“Are you referring to that idiot Kiba? HA!” he shouted. “I fed him and his stupid pet enough poison to kill 30 men a couple of hours ago! I’ll be surprised if he’s still breathing!”

Daichi raised his nagamaki, decided where to make his cut, but before he slit his sister’s throat, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his wrists. Then he didn’t feel his hands at all. He tried to bring his hands in front of his face, but screamed when he saw that he only had bloody stumps. He turned around slowly to face none other than Kiba, who stood there, a bloodthirsty look in his eye, with his sword drawn and his arms relaxed, hanging at his side. “Surprise.” Daichi stuttered as the half demon explained himself. “Yeah, I knew about that bucket of poison you tried to slip me and Akamaru. We threw it back up when you weren’t looking. It had absolutely no effect on us.” He kicked Daichi in the head, who spun halfway around before falling to his knees. Kiba raised his nodachi to cut off his head, but stopped himself. He lowered the deadly meter long blade and helped Inuko stand up again with his free hand. When she pulled away, however, he did not let go. Instead, he pulled her in closer and looked into her eyes. In a voice that was sincere as it was rough and deep, he asked her “If I kill him….will you hate me?”

Inuko was shocked. This was just plain staggering: He loved her so much, he would let her decide whether her brother should live or die. Question was, what would she decide? After he had tried to kill her, would it be right to let Kiba kill him, even though he was her own brother? Inuko just stood there, holding Kiba’s hand tight to her chest. No matter who she married, she couldn’t carry on the Takada family name. Was it right to end father’s line? Would it be right to kill him, now that he was unable to hurt anyone?

No. He could still hurt people. If Daichi betrayed both Isamu and Okuri, what else might he do? Who was to say whether or not he had a whole series of treacherous acts planned in case he was caught? Who was to say he didn’t set up a ring of traitors to fall back on? Daichi could, but he couldn’t be trusted. Okuri would kill him as soon as he heard of this.
