“What does my father have to do with it?” She asked suddenly defensive, crossing her arms.
“Lilly!” Clara snapped. “Watch your tone. This is captain of the king’s personal guard.”
“I don’t care who he is. Why should my father have anything to do with the fact that the block and parry are wrong?”
Now even the men were looking at her. She kept her gaze focused on the Captain. He smiled big and put up his hands placating. “I meant no disrespect to your father. In fact I knew him when we were both much younger. I simply meant that he had no taste for fighting. He preferred his books and the ladies.”
She sniffed and looked away. “Well then perhaps I’m not my father.”
“No, I can see that. But you do remind me of someone.” The inflection in his voice perked up her curiosity making her look back to him. He cleared his throat. “What do you say Clara.”
The older woman made an exasperated sound. “I’m supposed to be turning her into a Lady not a guard.”
“Come now wife. What if what she teaches us, saves the life of our king?”
“Wait. Wife?” Lilly turned on Clara astonished.
“Surprised?” Clara’s brows rose.
“Well..” Lilly rubbed her arm nervously. “You didn’t seem like you were married.”
