Price of Freedom 2

My eyes flew open. Memories from the night before came rushing back. What the hell had happened? I sat up and looked around. My wounds had been cleaned and dressed, and I was lying in a strange bed. This was not a place I would find back at base. Where the hell was I? That was when I heard a soft growl. My eyes narrowed...until I found the source of the growl. It came from a little tabby hybrid. His ears were back, and he glared at me out of two toned eyes. "Leo? What're you doing to our injured guest!?"

The same girl from the alley threw open the door. Her eyes widened when she saw I was awake. "Oh...um...how are you feeling?" I turned away and looked out the window. So she was the one who had helped me. "Are you hungry?" My stomach rummbled in response, and I looked down at my hands. I didn't want her pity. She should have left me where I was. "I made chocolate chip pancakes. They're Leo's favorite." She smiled and ruffled the tabby's hair. He grabbed her leg and hid behind her, shooting me a dirty glare. "I don't trust him...he needs to go. Please Alice." She frowned. "Leo...you know that's not how we do things here. Behave." He flinched as if she had struck him and he ran from the room. "YOU NEVER THINK ABOUT HOW I FEEL!!!"

Alice sighed and looked at me. I'll leave food in front of the door. Eat it if you want." I looked back to the window. "Or leave if you want...but I don't advise it...they're still looking for you. I washed your cloths." My ears perked up and I felt my face heat. "Only the top half I promise. Leo changed your pants. I..."

"What do you want from me?" She stared at me. "Want?" My eyes narrowed. "I don't have time for childish games. Tell me what you want or better yet kill me." Her eyes widened in horror. "I just wanted to help you..." My ear twitched in annoyance. "Why would a human help a hybrid?" She smiled. "Why not? It is the duty of every person to help someone in need. That's the only way to bring peace to this world." She looked so calm and serious...I knew she wasn't lying. My heart sped up...I had never met anyone like her. "That's not how this world works."

I looked back out the window. She was quiet, and eventually I turned back to see what she was doing. She had a wistful look on her face, and she was also staring out the window. The light hit her eyes and made them the color of honey. She had a soft...sad...smile on her face. "I know the world is cruel. There is so much hate. So much violence" Her eyes met mine. "But, it only takes one act of kindness to change someone's life." That was the moment I fell in love.
