Tales of Okuri Tale 3 of 7 Eliminating the Competition

But Kusanagi still moved. It was clearly going to slit Okuri’s throat, so he raised his Nodachi in defense. But the blade shattered, the metal fragments disappearing into the air, and Kusanagi hit its target. The sword, fortunately, had not possessed enough intelligence to cut the jugular, which would have caused major blood loss. It only cut part of his throat, not even hitting the trachea. Most of the damage, however, was not physical. Kusanagi had sent a surge of its divine power through his system, and Okuri had sacrificed almost all of his chakra to survive.

And so there was Okuri, on his knees, bleeding and almost beaten. Kusanagi hovered in the air, bobbing up and down in the air slightly. Yata no Kagami and Yasakani no Magatama hovered on either side of it, rotating clockwise. Okuri perceived nothing, no sounds, no images other than the 3 weapons before him.

A lesser mind might complain about how unfair this was. But was not the sort of thing Okuri would do. As he kneeled in his dark mental realm, akin to an icy cave, he thought only ‘This changes nothing.’ He gazed upon the 3 objects opposing his will and thought only ‘I’m going to win.’ His visual perception of reality increased and he became aware of the joyous mood the crowd was in. He saw the faces of his brothers, distraught and confused. ‘I’m going to win this for them.’ In his mind, he felt another being stirring. The Seven Tailed Wolf – the bijuu to which he was the jiinchuriki – had sensed his near death state and was preparing itself for an imminent release. ‘I’m going to win this, even if I have to use him.’ His sense of hearing activated, and he heard the cheers of the people. They filled him with a potent rage. The Seven Tails basked in the wrath, enjoying the violent emotions. ‘I’m going to win this, especially if I have to use him!’

A whirlwind began to envelop Okuri, and his voice boomed “I’M NOT FINISHED YET!!!” Instantly, the crowd came to a dead silence and stopped moving, only turning their heads in Okuri’s direction. He was completely cloaked in the whirlwind now, and he began to feel the demonic power flow through him.

And as quickly as it began, it ended. The whirlwind dissipated slowly, first revealing a pair of bloodshot eyes.
